Active interaction with a child such as playing, singing and other activities that promote brain stimulation, can have a positive and long-term impact on a child’s development. Especially when it is performed consistently from the child’s birth to age five this age range is believed to be the Golden Age Period, which is the most critical period in developing the child’s fullest potential.
William and Lily Foundation, together with SurfAid Indonesia, launch a training initiative in February 2017 called KPA (Child Care Class – Kelas Pengasuhan Anak). KPA main core program is trying to find creative ways to get parents more involved and learn about good parenting, a way to help parents and caregivers to provide practical understanding and skills on the importance of providing effective care and stimulation in the early years of childhood. In the latter stages, it may give parents boost of confidence and necessary skills to provide care and create a better environment for the children to grow.
In Laboya Barat, KPA approach starts from a series of preliminary discussion with various partners, followed with trainings for health volunteers (kader) for Posyandu (Integrated Health
Center – Pos Pelayanan Terpadu) and parents. Kader Posyandu plays as an agent of change. They are chosen because they have a pivotal role in assisting and advising parents on good parenting practice and children development issues. Therefore, in later stage, kader will give assistance and trainings to parents during Posyandu. In this sense, KPA is expected to gain cross-cutting benefit, where it touches base with health, nutrition, and also education. KPA trainings itself consist of 10 sessions of training and discussion with various theme ranging from parenting issues, the importance of Posyandu, the importance of future planning for children, children’s cognitive development, and toys-making workshop. The first five sessions concentrate on reflection and sharing discussion on children’s development as well as parents’ current parenting method. The last five sessions, on the other hand, deal with child’s motoric and language development as well as a toy-making session with their children at the end. Teaching parents how to make low-cost toys with their children, can be used as an effective learning tool and stimulate the child’s development, while increasing parenting skills. It delivers on multiple levels.
During KPA program mothers shows shift in perspective on how to plan a better future for their children. They also shows more concern in their parenting style.
Aside from that, mothers also now show commitment to have a spousal discussion on parenting issues, as well as involving their spouse more in children’s future planning.
